At the Montessori School of Raleigh, our Toddler Program offers a warm, thoughtfully prepared environment where our youngest learners begin their journey toward independence, confidence, and joyful discovery. Guided by trained Montessori educators, toddlers explore and grow through hands-on experiences that support every area of development.

A Day in the Life with Our Toddler Program

At The Montessori School of Raleigh, our Toddler Program (15 months to 3 years) nurtures independence, language, movement, and social-emotional growth through hands-on experiences and caring relationships. Children learn to participate in self-care and dressing routines, begin toileting with support, carry and use materials purposefully, and prepare snacks. They develop coordination by walking steadily, climbing, and using tools like spoons or scissors. Language grows from gestures and simple words to short phrases and full sentences, supported by songs, stories, and group activities. Socially, toddlers learn to separate from caregivers, play alongside and eventually with peers, express needs with words, and show empathy. Cognitively, they choose materials with purpose, return them with guidance, sort and sequence objects, and build concentration and curiosity. Each child progresses at their own pace, guided in a thoughtfully prepared Montessori environment.

When a child is working on a ‘work’ in a Montessori classroom, so many parts of their mind are being used and we’re paying attention to every aspect. With the bells, for instance, they’re using fine motor skills, systems thinking, using a sequence to understand steps, then conversing with a peer or with me, using language and social skills to seek or offer support. It’s amazing to participate in this process with them—to see them discover and become who they are as whole people.
