OVERVIEW:

The Montessori School of Raleigh is a community dedicated to the education of children guided by the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. MSR has provided opportunities for the Triangle's youngest citizens to "learn by doing" since 1974. The MSR Middle School, grades 7-9, has been graduating accomplished learners since 2001.

Grades: Toddler (18 months) through Grade 9 (age 15).

Composition: Day student population from throughout the Triangle representing the races, cultures, religions, and languages of a multi-national population.

Operating Budget: $4.1 million

Leadmine Campus (ages 18 months to 12 years): 46,000 square feet of instructional space on 9.5 acres in suburban North Raleigh.

Middle School Campus (ages 12-15): 35 agricultural acres of meadow, pine, and deciduous hardwood forest with 4,700 square feet of specially designed instructional space.

Philosophy: That students are active participants, problem solvers, and learners who learn best "by doing", guided by accomplished teachers who are gifted facilitators.

Curriculum: A core curriculum of math, language, science, and culture taught in an experiential and inter-disciplinary manner to students cross-age grouped in 3-year developmental learning "cycles."

Capital Campaign: Pledges and gifts to 25th Anniversary Campaign exceeded $1,000,000 at campaign's end in July, 2000. Pledges and gifts to the 30th Anniversary Comprehensive Campaign have exceeded 50% of the $1,250,000 goal.

Governance: 12-20 member unpaid Board of Trustees.

Leadership: Head of School, Meg Thomas. B.S. and M.Ed Xavier University. Experience: 25 years. Tenure at MSR: 1 year.

Strong leadership, a thoughtful planning process, and prudent financial management have enabled MSR to meet past planning goals with success. Through institutional assessment and careful long-range planning, high educational standards have been met and emerging opportunities seized during a time of growth.
