Welcome

A school, like any other service organization, is only as good as its people are gifted, devoted, skilled, and experienced. To find, to engage, and to retain the most talented Faculty possible is one of the most important things that I do.

Strong hiring, fine facilities and materials, sound fiscal management, strong compensation and benefits, and a grounded educational philosophy driven by a clear educational and institutional mission are the bedrock of our strength. Three additional characteristics make us an employer and workplace of choice and a school of distinction that is drawing national attention: the proven ability to envision and to implement, the assembly of a group of gifted professional practitioner teachers, and a healthy bias for change, growth, and professional development.

In short, we are a Montessori school that constantly strives for excellence, that is a magnet for the finest in the field, that has national visibility and recognition, and that institutionalizes individual and institutional self-scrutiny and improvement.

If those characteristics define the kind of place where you would like to work, live, and grow, we invite your further interest. I look forward to answering any questions that you may have regarding the School and the unusual professional opportunities we offer.

Raleigh: Best Place to Live:

A civic-minded, family-oriented community, Raleigh has been named "Best Place to Live" (Money ) and "Best Place to Do Business" (Fortune) within the last five years, and just this year "Best Place to Retire" as well as one of the best places to live. Raleigh is a center for both higher education and technology, but is an affordable and friendly place to live.

In 1996, the Raleigh area earned the distinction of one of the top ten metropolitan areas in the nation in terms of economic growth. Much of the region's appeal to business is the presence of three respected research universities. North Carolina State University in Raleigh is the largest with 27,000 students, followed by UNC at Chapel Hill, ranked among the top research universities in the nation. In 1997 ten graduate programs at UNC ranked among the nations top 20, according to US News and World Reports. Duke University, located in Durham, serves as an international center for medicine, as well as a leading academic and research institution. Duke's graduate program in medicine ranked third in the nation by US News and World Reports. Almost 26,000 students attend one of the region's remaining schools, including Meredith College, Peace College, St. Augustine's College, and Shaw University.

Education breeds an entrepreneurial spirit and fuels business growth. The benefits of living and working in a progressive community such as Raleigh are numerous and include steady employment, growth in personal income levels, and, among other quality-of-life-benefits, access to educational, cultural and recreational activities.

MSR: A Great Place to Work:

MSR has an attractive 10-acre campus in suburban North Raleigh and a 35-acre agricultural site in rural Durham County for its Adolescents' Center for Study and Work (Middle School). In its 30th year, as a result of both a quality program and a talented staff, student retention has increased, resulting in a growth of 82% in the last ten years (from 232 students to 422). This growth provided for major improvements to the entire campus, including completely renovated or new classroom environments, a 10,000 square foot Watson Activity Center, a Junior Olympic soccer field, and expanded support for faculty. More recent continued growth includes a model Middle School (Grades 7 - 9, Ages 12 - 15) on its separate rural site, and a 9,500 square foot new building that also provides dedicated space for the Children's House Encore program and an expanded Upper Elementary program, while freeing space elsewhere on campus for dedicated spaces for a Fine Arts studio, a third section of Toddler, the Elementary Encore program, volunteer work space, expanded meeting spaces, and enhanced summer programs. With a compelling School Improvement Plan, strong Board leadership, and stable educational management in place, this is a particularly exciting time in the life of the school
