The Leadmine and
Middle School Campus
At the heart of a
Montessori education is a beautiful, carefully prepared environment that
responds to the needs and characteristics of each child at each three
year developmental cycle. Every detail of MSR's facilities - from design
to siting and construction - is driven by this conviction. The 9.5 acre
campus, owned by the Montessori School of Raleigh, is located on Leadmine
Road in suburban north Raleigh and comprises five buildings designed and
laid out so as to resemble a village for children. The Leadmine campus
includes:
The Children's
House Building
The Williams
Elementary Building
The Encore Building
The Watson Activity
Center
The new Elementary
and Encore Building
The Middle School
is on a separate 35 acre rural campus, located in Durham County at 408
Andrews Chapel Rd.
Within the Montessori
philosophy the out-of-doors are a natural extension of the classroom and
are thus central to the accomplishment of our educational mission. Well-maintained
decks and gardens have been added or upgraded in the last five years as
part of an extensive Outdoor Environment Site Master Plan developed with
educational environment specialist Robin Moore. Play areas for the 3-6
year-olds with age-appropriate structures designed and built by a Primary-trained
(3-6) Montessorian have replaced aging structures and meet or exceed all
State mandated safety requirements and regulations while remaining beautiful,
engaging places of exploration. In 1997 a junior Olympic soccer field
was dedicated and is used primarily by the 6-12 age students. An additional
structure(s) now in the design stage will be built this fall and early
winter for the elementary students on the edge of a natural, relatively
wild preserve at the back of the campus. The Middle School curriculum
will use the land for study while being a natural resource and site for
the extension of the 3-6 and 6-12 programs.
